Reviewing Larry June's 4 Deep No Sleep

Larry’s Too Versatile: Larry June’s 4 Deep No Sleep

One of the most underrated rappers in the game dropped new heat recently. 4 Deep No Sleep, perpetuates Larry June’s reputation for being able to switch up from old school to new school, from trap to conscious. Nonetheless, his authenticated lyrics and OG mindset never leaves, “I calculate my steps it’s hard to hit a moving target!” he claims, on Larry’s Anthem. The 11 track project released via is Soundcloud (Larry June TFM) on 4/20. The bay area rapper’s honest yet still macho lyrics have gained him notoriety in recent years, even gaining him a tour with Post Malone.

Larry’s strong output of music and closeness to his fans has made him a favorite among bay area fans and this popularity has now begun to spread. As this project marks his latest push for next year’s XXL freshman cover, there are few other rappers who can flow just as effortlessly and June. With very West Coast based production, June flows on topics ranging from attending gun shows in Vegas to questioning his current life status. “Cuz life ain’t nothing without love if we keeping it real, how could I ever say I made it if I’m trappin’ still? June says on . In an 808’s obsessed hip hop world, Larry manages to keep us hooked with thought provoking lyrics like the aforementioned line while songs lack a hard hitting bass. Though some may argue they prefer the fast rapping of songs like L Murder, June’s flow over this tape is slow and melodic.

Overall, 4 Deep No Sleep is no defining tape for Larry June, it doesn’t live up to Sock It To Me, or even Larry Two. But it does give listeners the brash honesty and healthy beats we need for the summer. Producers like Dolan Beatz on Never Knew, Nar On The Track on HELP! Manage to show up and bless Larry with lovely sounds. Thank you, Larry, 4/5.
